- 5 filming locations
Five filming locations, one story, four hours following the von Trapp family's footsteps.
"The Sound of Music" was filmed in and around Salzburg in 1965 – and although the film never reached the same popularity in Austria as in the English-speaking world, Salzburg today is the pilgrimage site for the roughly 300,000 Sound of Music fans who visit annually. Our private tour covers every major filming location – compactly in 4 hours – with a German- and English-speaking chauffeur-guide who knows the production stories and original anecdotes from Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and the "real" von Trapp family first-hand.
Unlike the large-bus tours with 40 fellow travellers, a fixed script and 8 hours of sitting, our private tour adapts entirely to your pace. We stop as long as you want at each location, answer your questions, detour into hidden corners (Leopoldskron library, Hellbrunn trick fountains) and offer an optional coffee break at Café Tomaselli or Konditor Fürst. The tour works equally well for a family with children (4–12), a couple or a senior group.
We recommend the morning tour (09:00 start, 13:00 end) because Mirabell Gardens and Hellbrunn are least crowded then. Afternoon (14:00 start, 18:00 end) is a good alternative for late risers, but Mondsee closes at 17:30. In rain the tour works equally well – Leopoldskron and Mondsee are weather-protected, the pavilion is roofed, only Mirabell Gardens is weather-sensitive. We bring umbrellas.
Five stops in four hours
01Mirabell Palace & Gardens
30 min
The most famous filming location: "Do-Re-Mi" was shot here. We walk the exact sequence – Pegasus fountain, dwarf garden, the staircase up to the final chord. Mirabell Gardens are free to enter, quietest between 08:30 and 10:00.
02Leopoldskron Palace
45 min
The film set for the von Trapp villa. Today a luxury hotel (Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron) but the lake-front facade is visible from the main road. We park at Leopoldskroner Weiher and walk the short promenade. Interior visit possible as hotel guest (€20 café spend).
03Hellbrunn – Sixteen Going on Seventeen pavilion
30 min
The glass pavilion where Liesl and Rolf dance "I am sixteen, going on seventeen". The original spot was Schloss Leopoldskron; the pavilion was moved to Hellbrunn in 1992 because too many visitors arrived. Today free to access in the Hellbrunn palace garden.
04Mondsee Basilica St. Michael
45 min incl. drive
The wedding scene between Maria and Captain von Trapp was filmed in this basilica – a 30-minute drive from Salzburg through the Salzkammergut. Interior visit free (donation appreciated). We recommend a short detour to the Mondsee shore for an espresso at Café Frauenschuh.
- 05
Schloss Anif (photo stop)
10 min photo stop
The mini-castle on the small island was the opening scene of the film – the drone shot over the garden. Today privately owned, no interior access, but the photo spot from Anifer Hauptstrasse is famous.

Common questions about the tour
Can't find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp – we typically reply within minutes.
WhatsAppHow many stops are included?+
Five original filming locations: Mirabell, Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn pavilion, Mondsee, Schloss Anif. We can add St. Peter's Cemetery (brief escape scene) as a 6th stop on request – approximately 15 minutes more.
Are entries to the locations included?+
Mirabell Gardens, Hellbrunn pavilion and Mondsee basilica are free. The Hellbrunn trick fountains (interior) cost €13/person and are optional – we recommend seeing only the outdoor pavilion (Sound of Music-relevant and free).
Can we go inside Leopoldskron Palace?+
Only as a hotel guest or with café spend (€20 minimum per person at the palace café). The exterior facade from the lake is the famous film view – the interior was not used in the film.
Does the tour work with children?+
Excellent for children 6+. We bring the film soundtrack as a Spotify playlist, the guide adapts stories for children, and Mirabell Gardens + Hellbrunn pavilion offer plenty of running space. Cybex child seats free on request.
Can we come direct from the airport?+
Yes. We pick you up at SZG, drive direct to the hotel for check-in (15 min), then start the tour. Luggage stays at the hotel. For MUC arrivals we recommend arriving in Salzburg the day before – 1h 45 drive after a long flight is a lot.
