The route

Over Walserberg, through the Inn valley, past Chiemsee.

Our standard route follows the A1 from Salzburg West to the German border at Walserberg (km 14), switches onto the A8 and runs via Bad Reichenhall, the Inn Valley junction and Lake Chiemsee through to south Munich, then A99 and A92 onto the airport apron. With clear roads we cover the distance in 1h 45. From May to September we automatically add a 25-minute buffer for weekend bookings because Inn Valley congestion has become a reliable companion.

If you'd prefer, we'll take the alternative route via the B304 and the Salzkammergut – 30 minutes longer but scenically spectacular, and for first-time Salzburg visitors a real photographic goodbye. Mention it at booking and we'll cost the difference transparently.

For business travellers needing to catch a 07:30 flight, we recommend a 04:30 departure from the inner city – that gives a 30-minute safety buffer at bag-drop and security. Our dispatch will call you the evening before if a closure is announced on the A8 and suggest an adjusted departure.

Insider knowledge

Three things we always tell travellers on this route.

J

Jürgen W.

Dispatcher · since 2010

First: avoid travelling Fridays 14:00–18:00 in either direction. The A8 turns into a 90-minute jam between Bad Reichenhall and Rosenheim. If a Friday-evening flight is unavoidable, we'll detour via the B304.

Second: in winter conditions we recommend departing 60 minutes earlier. Salzburg may sit above freezing while the Inn valley still has slush narrowing the lanes. Our V-Class and Vito run year-round on Vredestein Wintrac Pro.

Third: if you're travelling with skis or snowboards, book a Vito. A ski bag fits diagonally in an E-Class but only by folding half a rear seat – and that's no longer a premium ride.
