"The first boat at 8 a.m. was the best advice. The lake was completely calm, the trumpet echo gave us goosebumps. Our chauffeur waited relaxed at the jetty."

The Königssee is Germany's cleanest lake – and only quiet electric boats are allowed on it.
A private day tour from Salzburg into Berchtesgaden National Park: emerald water between sheer rock faces, the echo wall with its famous trumpet echo, the St. Bartholomä pilgrimage church and – if you wish – the silent Obersee.

Barely an hour from Salzburg lies one of the most dramatic lakes in the Alps.
The Königssee lies in the south of the Berchtesgaden region, about 35 kilometres and roughly an hour's drive from Salzburg. It is cut fjord-like into the rock: up to 190 metres deep, surrounded by sheer walls and so clean it measures as drinking-water quality. That is exactly why only electrically powered boats have been allowed since 1909 – the crossing is almost silent.
The heart of every tour is the boat ride to the St. Bartholomä peninsula. Halfway across, the boatman stops at the echo wall and plays a trumpet – the echo returns several times from the cliffs, a tradition going back more than a hundred years. The small baroque pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä with its red onion domes is one of the most photographed sights in the Alps.
With more time, continue by boat to the Salet landing and walk about 15 minutes to the Obersee – a silent, often mirror-still mountain lake with the Röthbach Falls, Germany's highest waterfall, in the background. This part is far quieter than St. Bartholomä and an insider tip for photographers.
Above the shore lies the Malerwinkel viewpoint, a short loop with the classic postcard view of the lake. Because the Königssee car park fills early in summer, our chauffeur takes you straight to the boat landing and waits while you cruise in peace – no parking hunt, no shuttle bus.
The Königssee combines well with Berchtesgaden, the salt mine or the Eagle's Nest into a longer day. When you inquire, simply tell us how much time you have – we put the route together to fit.

"Take the first boat. By 11 a.m. the magic of the empty lake is gone."
Markus T.
Chauffeur-guide · Berchtesgaden region
The Königssee is a mass destination in summer. The difference between a magical and a mediocre day is the hour. The first boats leave around 08:00 – being on the water then means a mirror-still, almost empty lake. From 11 a.m. the queues form at the jetty and the photos get crowded.
My second tip concerns the Obersee: most day visitors stay at St. Bartholomä and turn back. Yet the Obersee is the more beautiful part – quieter, more dramatic, with the Röthbach Falls behind it. If you do one extra thing, make it this.
And bring cash: the snack inn at St. Bartholomä with smoked char straight from the lake is an experience you can't book through an app. It's exactly these small, analogue moments that stay with you.

WhatsAppHow far is the Königssee from Salzburg?+
About 35 km or roughly an hour's drive via Berchtesgaden. The route is scenic and easy to drive.
Do I need a boat ticket and do you book it?+
The boat ride is paid separately. On request we pre-book the tickets so you avoid waiting. We list the options in your offer.
Is the Obersee worth adding?+
Very much. The Obersee is quieter and more dramatic than St. Bartholomä. It adds about 90 minutes and a short, easy walk.
Is the tour possible year-round?+
The boat runs weather-dependent year-round, reduced in deep winter. The Königssee in snow is especially atmospheric.
Do I need a passport?+
The Königssee is in Germany. Within the Schengen area there are no border checks, but you should carry a valid ID.
What does the tour cost?+
We price every tour individually by vehicle, duration and chosen stops. Send us an inquiry – you receive a transparent flat-rate offer within 60 minutes.
