Overview

Salzburg Taxi: Why More and More Guests Switch to a Fixed-Price Chauffeur

When you land at Salzburg Airport or step off the Railjet at the main station, the first instinct is to look for a taxi. Understandable, because Salzburg is wonderfully compact: W. A. Mozart Airport sits only about 4 kilometres from the old town, and the main station is less than 2 kilometres from Mirabellplatz. Yet it is exactly on these short, predictable routes that the difference between a street taxi and a pre-booked private transfer shows most clearly. In a taxi, you get in and watch the meter climb. With us, you know your price before you have even packed your suitcase.

VPC Premium Transfer is not a taxi company in the classic sense but a chauffeur service with fixed prices. You book online or by phone, receive a binding flat rate for your route immediately, and you know exactly which car will arrive: a Mercedes E-Class, a V-Class or a Vito for groups and lots of luggage. No queuing at a taxi rank, no hoping for a free cab in a snowstorm, no surprises when it is time to pay. There are no surcharges for night rides, weekends or luggage; the price you see is the price you pay.

Airport pickups are where this matters most. Our chauffeurs track your flight live. If your plane from Frankfurt or London lands late, your pickup shifts automatically with it, at no extra waiting cost. Your driver stands in the arrivals hall with a name sign, helps with the luggage and has you at the Hotel Sacher, the Sheraton or your apartment in Nonntal within minutes. Anyone who has stood in the taxi queue at Salzburg Airport at 11 pm knows exactly why this matters.

Within the city and into the surrounding region, we are the predictable alternative too: rides from your hotel into the old town, to dinner on the Mönchsberg, to a business meeting on Alpenstraße, or out to Anif and Hallein. For night rides after a concert at the Festspielhaus, simply reserve your car in advance and your chauffeur will already be waiting at the exit. And for day trips to Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang or the Salzkammergut lakes, we are in any case a far more comfortable choice than any taxi with a running meter.

In short: if you searched for "Salzburg taxi" but what you actually want is reliability, comfort and price transparency, you are in the right place. Calculate your fixed price in our booking tool, just enter pickup and destination, and you will see instantly what your ride costs. Binding, with no fine print.

From Behind the Wheel: What a Salzburg Chauffeur Knows About Taxi Rides

Stefan Reiter, Senior Chauffeur at VPC Premium Transfer

I have been driving guests around Salzburg for more than fifteen years, and the most common question at the airport is always the same: how much is the ride into town? With us I cannot get the answer wrong, because the price is fixed at the moment of booking. You can visibly see people relax when they hear that. After a long flight, nobody wants to stare at a meter and mentally check whether the driver is really taking the shortest route along Innsbrucker Bundesstraße.

What many people underestimate: Salzburg is small, but the old town is tricky for cars. Hotels like the Goldener Hirsch or addresses on Getreidegasse can only be reached via specific access lanes and retractable bollards. An out-of-town driver can easily circle for ten minutes. We know exactly which approach belongs to which hotel, where you may stop during festival season and when it is wiser to avoid the Staatsbrücke altogether. In the rain or on Advent weekends, when the taxi rank grinds to a halt, our guests are already warm and on their way.

My advice for anyone with an early flight: book the evening before and sleep soundly. I am outside your hotel at 4:30 am, the car is pre-heated, the luggage is loaded in two minutes and you are at the terminal a quarter of an hour later. No phoning around in the middle of the night, no wondering whether a taxi will show up at all. In the end, that reliability is the real reason our regulars never wait at a taxi rank again.

Local deep dive

Salzburg up close: where a driver's local knowledge matters

Anyone who knows Salzburg's old town knows one thing: you cannot simply pull up at the front door. Getreidegasse, Alter Markt and Goldgasse are pedestrian zones protected by retractable bollards, with vehicle access only by permit and usually only until 11 in the morning. A driver without local knowledge ends up circling along Rudolfskai or stuck in the one-way loop around the Staatsbrücke. Our chauffeurs know the legal stopping points: for hotels like the Goldener Hirsch the approach via Bürgerspitalgasse, for the right bank of the old town the Makartplatz and Dreifaltigkeitsgasse area, for the Hotel Sacher the short loading bay on the Schwarzstraße riverside. When booking, just name your hotel and we coordinate the rest with reception in advance.

At Salzburg Airport (SZG), arrival works like this: your driver tracks the landing on flight radar, enters the terminal car park about 20 minutes before actual touchdown and waits with a name sign directly at the baggage-hall exit of Terminal 1. SZG is compact, and from the apron to the exit rarely takes more than 15 minutes even with checked luggage. From there it is roughly 200 metres to the car, no shuttle, no scanning the forecourt. During winter charter waves, when planes from London, Dublin and Copenhagen land every quarter hour on Saturdays, that fixed assignment is priceless: the taxi rank queue can easily stretch past 30 minutes.

The seasons visibly reshape Salzburg. During the Festival weeks from late July to late August, Hofstallgasse around the Festspielhaus is closed or reduced to one lane from late afternoon, and before curtain time around 7 pm, Herrengasse and the Neutor tunnel back up. If you are heading to a premiere, schedule your pickup 30 minutes earlier than usual. In Advent, the Christmas markets on Domplatz and Mirabellplatz add another layer: on Advent Saturdays the city centre is effectively gridlocked from midday, and routing via the Lehener bridge or the Kapuzinerberg tunnel genuinely saves 20 minutes. On February ski Saturdays the Tauern motorway jams from the Salzburg interchange, which is why we deliberately plan transfers towards Zell am See via the federal road through Lofer.

The Hauptbahnhof has its quirks too. The official taxi rank sits on Südtiroler Platz on the city side, but it empties fast when Railjets arrive from Vienna and Munich. We wait instead in the short-stay zone at the northern Lastenstraße exit, two minutes on foot through the platform underpass, where your driver can genuinely wait rather than just roll through. For night arrivals, say the Nightjet around 1 am, this is the only reliable meeting point, because regular taxis at that hour mostly run on radio dispatch and the rank stays empty.

One final detail only locals know: the one-way logic of the Neustadt. To get from Mirabellplatz towards Linzer Gasse you must take the long loop via Franz-Josef-Straße and Sterngasse, and one wrong turn at the lights costs ten minutes. In rain, and at the 7:45 school run, the Sterneckstraße axis clogs inbound as well. That is why our drivers plan pickup times not by kilometres but by clock and weekday, and will tell you honestly when a 10-minute buffer is enough and when it should be 25. That experience is the difference between a ride and a dependable service.

What our guests say

"Arrived from London on a ski Saturday and the taxi rank queue was endless. Our driver stood with a sign right at baggage claim and we reached our old town hotel in ten minutes. He knew exactly where stopping is allowed near the Goldener Hirsch. Completely stress-free."

"Nightjet arrival at 1 am at the Hauptbahnhof and the taxi rank was empty. The chauffeur waited at the northern Lastenstraße exit as arranged, and the fixed price had been set since booking. Spotless Mercedes, calm drive, even water on board. Exactly how a night pickup should work."

"We had Festival tickets and dreaded the chaos around Hofstallgasse. The driver deliberately picked us up earlier, routed through the Neutor and dropped us off on time. After the performance he was waiting at the agreed spot. Only the reconfirmation arrived a bit late, otherwise flawless."

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp – we typically reply within minutes.

WhatsApp
How much does a taxi from Salzburg Airport to the old town cost?+

In a classic taxi the meter decides, so the final price depends on route, traffic and waiting time. With us you see your binding flat rate instantly in the booking calculator before you commit. The route is short at around 4 kilometres, and your price stays the same even in traffic or during a diversion.

How is VPC different from a normal Salzburg taxi?+

Three things: first, a flat rate instead of a meter, so you know the final price before the ride. Second, pre-booking instead of hailing or waiting at a rank, your chauffeur is guaranteed to be there. Third, you know which car is coming, an immaculate Mercedes E-Class, V-Class or Vito, not whatever happens to pull up.

Can I get a car at short notice or at night?+

Yes, we operate around the clock, including Sundays and holidays, with no night surcharge. Short-notice rides are often possible depending on availability, just call us. For early flights, evenings at the Festspielhaus or late arrivals we recommend booking ahead so your car is firmly reserved.

Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?+

Yes. We track every flight live using the flight number you provide at booking. If your landing is delayed, your pickup shifts automatically at no extra waiting cost. Your chauffeur will be in the arrivals hall with a name sign whether you land on time or two hours late.

Do you also pick up from Salzburg main station?+

Of course. Your chauffeur waits at the agreed meeting point at the station, helps with your luggage and takes you straight to your hotel, into the old town or onward to the ski resorts. We stay flexible with train delays too, just add your train number when booking.

Do you cover longer routes, for example to Hallstatt or Munich?+

Yes, and this is where the flat rate really shines. We run day trips to Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang and the Salzkammergut as well as transfers to Munich Airport and ski resorts such as Zell am See, Kitzbühel and Obertauern. The price is fixed in advance, no matter how long the journey takes.

How can I pay?+

You can pay conveniently online by credit card or PayPal, so everything is settled before you arrive. For corporate clients we are happy to issue invoices. There are no hidden fees; the flat rate shown at booking is the final price including all charges.

Do you have child seats and space for lots of luggage?+

Yes, child seats and boosters are provided free of charge on request, just tell us the children's ages when booking. For families with lots of luggage or ski equipment we recommend the Mercedes V-Class or Vito, with room for up to eight passengers plus suitcases.
