"As Sound of Music fans the basilica was a must – but our chauffeur's Irrsee tip was the real highlight."

Lake Mondsee is the warmest lake in the Salzkammergut – and the whole world knows its basilica from The Sound of Music.
A relaxed private day tour from Salzburg through the western Salzkammergut lakes: Lake Fuschl, St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang and Lake Mondsee with the famous St. Michael basilica where Maria and the Captain married.
- 3 lakes
- St. Michael basilica
- 5–7 hours
- Up to 7 guests
Half an hour from Salzburg the Salzkammergut begins – with three lakes that could hardly be more different.
Lake Mondsee lies about 28 kilometres east of Salzburg, on the western edge of the Salzkammergut. With water temperatures up to 27 degrees in summer it is the warmest of the region's large lakes – a popular bathing lake that is pleasantly quiet in spring and autumn.
Mondsee became famous through the St. Michael basilica on the market square. Its striking yellow twin-tower façade served as the backdrop for the wedding scene in The Sound of Music in 1965. Film fans still come from all over the world, yet the basilica is also architecturally important: the late-Gothic building houses a magnificent baroque high altar by Meinrad Guggenbichler.
On the way to Mondsee it makes sense to loop via two more lakes. The small, deep-green Lake Fuschl with Schloss Fuschl is an ideal first stop. St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang – birthplace of Mozart's mother – rounds out the tour with a lakeside promenade, the Mozart monument and views of the Schafberg.
Mondsee itself invites a stroll along the lakeside promenade, a coffee with a view of the Drachenwand and – in summer – a short boat ride or a dip in the warm water. For something quieter, continue to the neighbouring Irrsee, the warmest and most natural lake in Upper Austria.
This tour is deliberately relaxed – not a minute-by-minute schedule, but lake scenery, Austrian romance and time to breathe. When you inquire, tell us whether swimming, the basilica or a boat ride should be the focus.

"The basilica is famous – but the finest Mondsee moment is the Irrsee, which almost no one knows."

Chauffeur-guide · Salzkammergut
Most people come for the Sound of Music basilica and then drive off. A pity, because the real appeal of the area is the water. My tip: take time for the Irrsee right next door – a nature reserve where the water is warmer in high summer than at Mondsee and where there is hardly any bustle.
Second note: Mondsee is a popular bathing lake in July and August, and correspondingly busy. For peace, come in May, June or September – then you have the promenade almost to yourself and the Drachenwand mirrors in the still water.
And for food lovers: Mondsee has a small, fine cheese-making tradition. A piece of Mondsee cheese with fresh bread by the lake is exactly the kind of simple, genuine moment you take home from the Salzkammergut.

What to know before the tour
Can't find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp – we typically reply within minutes.
WhatsAppHow far is Lake Mondsee from Salzburg?+
About 28 km or roughly 30 minutes' drive via the A1. The lakes route via St. Gilgen and Fuschl is a little longer but more scenic.
Is this really the Sound of Music church?+
Yes. The St. Michael basilica in Mondsee served as the backdrop for the wedding scene of Maria and Captain von Trapp in 1965.
Can you swim in Lake Mondsee?+
Very much so in summer – at up to 27 degrees it is the warmest large lake in the region. Let us know in advance if you'd like to swim and we plan a suitable beach access.
Can Mondsee be combined with Hallstatt?+
Yes – both lie in the Salzkammergut. A combined tour needs a full day (8–10 hours), though. We are happy to quote it.
Is the tour possible year-round?+
Yes. In spring and autumn the lakes are especially quiet; in winter a still, often snowy mood lies over the landscape.
What does the tour cost?+
We price every tour individually by vehicle, duration and chosen stops. Send us an inquiry – you receive a transparent flat-rate offer within 60 minutes.
