"The documentation centre beforehand was the right advice – at the top everything suddenly had meaning. An impressive, thoughtful day."

At 1,834 metres, reachable only by a historic road and a brass elevator: the Eagle's Nest.
A private day tour from Salzburg via Berchtesgaden to the Eagle's Nest – with one of the most magnificent panoramas in the Alps and the chance to understand the site's history responsibly at the Obersalzberg.

A place with two faces: a spectacular view and a serious historical background.
The Eagle's Nest sits high above Berchtesgaden, about 35 kilometres from Salzburg. Built in 1938 on a rocky ridge, it is today a mountain restaurant with one of the widest panoramas in the northern Limestone Alps – on a clear day it reaches as far as Salzburg and deep into Bavaria.
The approach is unique: private vehicles are not allowed up. From the Obersalzberg a dedicated bus line carries visitors along a road blasted into the rock in 1938, with a single tunnel and just one hairpin, to the mountain station. From there a 124-metre tunnel leads to an original brass-clad elevator that climbs the final metres up inside the mountain. The journey alone is an experience.
At the top a panorama over the Berchtesgaden region, the Königssee and the surrounding peaks awaits. A short walk leads to the summit cross. The building itself houses a restaurant today – the historic fireplace inside is one of the few surviving original elements.
We recommend combining the tour with a visit to the Obersalzberg documentation centre. This modern museum sets the site's history – it was a second seat of government during the Nazi era – in a scholarly, critical context. That turns a pure viewpoint outing into a day with depth and perspective. Our chauffeurs handle this subject factually and respectfully.
The Eagle's Nest is weather-dependent and open only from about mid-May to late October. The bus line is the sole access; we time the Salzburg departure around the bus and elevator schedules so you don't have to wait at peak times.

Chauffeur-guide · Berchtesgaden region
Many come only for the panorama and the photo. That's understandable, but the place deserves context. The Obersalzberg documentation centre is excellently done and frames the history factually, without turning it into a backdrop. Invest an hour and you go up with a quite different, more mature understanding.
Practical tip: the Kehlstein bus line is the only access and often full by late morning. We book the bus tickets for an early slot and time the Salzburg departure accordingly – avoiding the queue at the valley station.
And mind the altitude: at 1,834 metres it is much cooler and windier than in the valley. A jacket belongs in your bag, even on a warm summer day. The restaurant at the top is solid, but for a quiet lunch I'd suggest the valley in Berchtesgaden.

No. The only access is the dedicated Kehlstein bus line from the Obersalzberg. Our chauffeur takes you to the bus terminal and waits there.

Weather-dependent, roughly from mid-May to late October. In winter the road is closed; the tour then focuses on Berchtesgaden and the documentation centre.

We strongly recommend it. It frames the site's history responsibly and makes the day far more meaningful. Allow about an hour.

The Eagle's Nest is in Germany. Within the Schengen area there are no border checks, but you should carry a valid ID.
