Why arriving at the Blaue Gans works differently from other hotels

Arthotel Blaue Gans stands at Getreidegasse 41-43, at the western end of the lane every visitor to Salzburg knows. The building sits inside the old town pedestrian zone. For us that means one thing: there is no classic forecourt in front of the door, as you would find at the hotels along the Salzach. Vehicle access to the old town is tightly restricted by time and by permit, and we respect those rules.

In practice we agree a stopping point with every guest at the edge of the pedestrian zone, usually around Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, from where the hotel is a short walk away. Your chauffeur helps you out of the car, takes the suitcases and, if you wish, walks with you to reception. If you travel with a lot of luggage, tell us when booking so we can plan for it and, where needed, coordinate with the hotel.

Our key advice for the summer Festival season: expect crowds, barriers and drop-off traffic around Hofstallgasse in the evenings. Guests of the Blaue Gans have a real advantage here, because they can walk to the Festival halls in a few minutes. You only really need the car for the airport, the station, excursions or dinner outside the city, and that is exactly where we come in.

The house

An old inn that became a gallery

The Blaue Gans is one of the most storied places to stay in Salzburg. The building is so old that its exact year of construction can no longer be determined with certainty. Vaulted ceilings, timber beams and thick walls speak of centuries as an inn on one of the city's most important trading lanes. Today the four-star house presents itself as an art hotel: contemporary works hang in corridors, rooms and public spaces, and the contrast between old walls and modern art defines its atmosphere.

For many guests that blend is the reason to stay here. Visitors travelling to the Salzburg Festival often look for a house where culture does not start at the concert hall door. At the Blaue Gans you sleep among paintings and sculptures, step outside onto Getreidegasse, and within a few steps reach Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz with its horse fountain and Hofstallgasse with the Grosses Festspielhaus, the Haus für Mozart and the Felsenreitschule.

This location is a gift for anyone on foot and a small challenge for arrival. Getreidegasse is narrow, busy and closed to general traffic. If you come by rental car or your own vehicle, you have to find a garage and then pull your luggage through the old town, often across cobblestones. With a private chauffeur you avoid all of that: we know the permitted stopping points, head for them directly and take care of the suitcases.

The hotel's surroundings deserve a mention too. At the western end of Getreidegasse is the lift up to the Mönchsberg and the Museum der Moderne, a natural addition for art-minded guests. Mozart's birthplace is a short stroll away, as are Universitätsplatz with its market and the Kollegienkirche. Everything that makes the old town special can be reached on foot from here.

Walk to the performance, let the chauffeur handle the rest

The Salzburg Festival shapes the city's summer, and few hotels sit closer to its venues than the Blaue Gans. Only a few minutes through the old town separate the hotel door from the Festival district. That changes how guests plan their transfers: most walk to the opera or concert, in evening dress or black tie, without worrying about drop-off lanes and waiting times.

The car is needed elsewhere. Many Festival guests fly into Munich or Vienna and prefer not to switch to a train after a long-haul flight. Others combine the Festival with dinner at Lake Fuschl, Lake Wolfgang or a country inn outside the city, or they attend a performance held outside the Festival district. In all of these cases we pick you up at the agreed stopping point and bring you back there after the evening.

Planning matters in these weeks. Around Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz and Hofstallgasse it gets very busy before curtain up and after the final applause, and some areas are closed at times. Our dispatch team knows these patterns and chooses stopping points that work reliably on Festival evenings. We send you the exact meeting point in writing, together with your chauffeur's name and phone number.

If you use the Festival season to meet friends or business partners, you can also book a chauffeur by the hour. This makes sense when a single day holds several appointments: lunch outside the city, a reception in the afternoon, the performance in the evening. The car then stays close by and is ready whenever you need it.

Onward travel

Airports, station and day trips from the Blaue Gans

Salzburg Airport lies just a few kilometres west of the old town. Depending on time of day and traffic, the drive to the stopping point near the hotel takes about 12 to 20 minutes. For departures we also allow for the short walk from the hotel to the car, so you arrive at check-in without rushing. For very early flights it is worth confirming the meeting point with your chauffeur the evening before.

Many international guests land in Munich. The drive from Munich Airport into Salzburg's old town takes about one hour and 45 minutes, longer when the A8 is busy. From Vienna Airport it is around three hours and 15 minutes. We drive both routes at a flat rate, with water on board and breaks whenever you like. For families we provide child seats on request.

Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is also quickly reached. If you arrive by train from Vienna, Munich or Innsbruck, we meet you on the platform or in the concourse and take you into the old town. This is especially convenient when travelling with heavy suitcases or instruments and you would rather not cross the city on foot or by bus.

Guests staying several days often use the Blaue Gans as a base for excursions. Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen in the Salzkammergut, the filming locations of The Sound of Music, or in winter the ski resorts of Zell am See, Kitzbühel and Obertauern are all within easy reach. We collect you at the agreed point, drive at your pace and bring you back to the old town in the evening.
