Senior chauffeur, over 15 years on Salzburg's old town routes
The most common surprise among Goldener Hirsch guests happens right at the airport: many assume we drive up to the hotel door. On the Getreidegasse that is simply impossible, the lane is a pedestrian zone. So I always stop on the Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz side, the shortest permitted approach to the hotel. From there it is a few minutes on foot; I take the suitcases and the guests enjoy their first view of the fortress. Honestly, that short walk is often the loveliest moment of the whole arrival.
During the summer festival season the area around the hotel tightens further. Hofstallgasse is partly closed, barriers go up around the festival halls, and anyone arriving without local knowledge quickly loses half an hour. In those weeks we deliberately schedule airport departures with more margin and know the quieter approaches via the new town side. My advice: book your return airport transfer together with your arrival, so your time slot is firmly reserved.
For departures from Munich I always plan together with my guests: border traffic at Walserberg, roadworks on the A8, long-haul check-in times. Better twenty minutes early at the terminal than a missed flight. And if you have a free day, I recommend Hallstatt in the early morning before the coaches arrive. We leave the Goldener Hirsch at eight, and my guests have the village almost to themselves.

Arriving on the Getreidegasse: what actually happens at Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz
The Goldener Hirsch sits in the middle of the Getreidegasse, and the Getreidegasse has been car-free for decades. There is no forecourt in front of the hotel portal, no doorman waving a car forward, and no exception permit for guest vehicles. Drivers who do not know this end up stuck in delivery traffic on Griesgasse or circling the Festspielhaus. Our chauffeurs therefore always head for Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, the small square at the western end of the Getreidegasse, right by the Horse Pond fountain and opposite the Felsenreitschule. From there it is about 80 metres on foot to the hotel entrance, flat, cobbled, and step-free.
The approach itself follows a fixed pattern: from the airport along Innsbrucker Bundesstrasse and through the Neutor tunnel, which opens directly onto Karajan-Platz. The Neutor is the decisive point, as it is the only sensible western access into this part of the Old Town. On a normal day the drive from the terminal takes 12 to 15 minutes. Your chauffeur stops on the square, unloads the luggage, and walks you and your cases to reception. You carry nothing yourself, and the car stays only as long as unloading takes, because stopping is permitted there while parking is not.
The seasons change this calculation considerably. During the Salzburg Festival from mid-July to the end of August, Karajan-Platz becomes the arrival zone for the Grosses Festspielhaus on performance days from late afternoon, with barriers, stewards, and one-way arrangements that can change by the hour. Anyone arriving at 6 pm for a premiere is competing with hundreds of concertgoers for the same stretch of asphalt. We therefore deliberately schedule festival arrivals before 4 pm, or coordinate an alternative handover point at Buergerspitalgasse with the concierge. Advent works much the same way: the Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz draws whole convoys of coaches at weekends, and the queues start back on the Staatsbruecke.
Winter has its own rhythm too. On ski-season Saturdays the changeover traffic of the ski resorts rolls through the city, the Tauern motorway exits back up onto the Muenchner Bundesstrasse, and a 20-minute buffer is not caution but experience. For departures to the airport in these weeks we recommend a pickup 15 minutes earlier than usual. Your chauffeur will already be waiting at Karajan-Platz, the hotel will bring your luggage ahead on request, and the move from breakfast table to vehicle takes less than five minutes.
Minute by minute, a typical arrival looks like this: your chauffeur tracks your flight and is standing in the arrivals hall of Salzburg Airport by the time you land; the terminal is so compact that gate to baggage belt rarely takes more than ten minutes. After the greeting it is two minutes to the car, twelve minutes through the Neutor, then the stop at Karajan-Platz. The chauffeur notifies the hotel in advance, so reception is prepared. Arriving in the pedestrian zone – how the handover works
The Getreidegasse is a pedestrian zone all day; the bollards at its entrances open only for permit holders and usually only in the morning. That is why our standard stop is Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz by the Horse Pond, barely a hundred metres from the hotel entrance. Your chauffeur walks with you, handles the luggage over the cobblestones and hands it directly to the hotel porter. In rain we keep umbrellas ready, and reception is informed of your arrival time in advance.
