A design hotel right on the river, in the middle of city traffic
Hotel Stein is a four-star house on Giselakai, on the right bank of the Salzach and immediately next to the Staatsbrücke. Look out of the window and you see across the river to the old town, the domes of the cathedral and Hohensalzburg Fortress. The hotel is best known for its rooftop terrace, the Steinterrasse, with its views out over the roofs of the old town. It combines a historic building with a contemporary design concept and therefore attracts couples, city-break travellers and guests who want to explore Salzburg on foot.
That location is precisely what makes the arrival more interesting than at a hotel on the edge of town. The Staatsbrücke is the main link between the old town and the right bank, where riverside traffic, buses, cyclists and plenty of pedestrians all meet. Right behind it begin the Platzl, Linzer Gasse and Steingasse, three of the liveliest corners of the city. For a driver without local knowledge, Giselakai with large luggage is a small challenge. For our chauffeurs it is everyday routine.
From Salzburg Airport it is only a few kilometres to the hotel. Depending on the time of day the drive takes between 12 and 20 minutes, usually shorter in the morning and a little longer in evening traffic and on festival days. We choose the route according to the current conditions and approach the hotel so that you get out on the right side and never have to cross the road with your cases.
Many Hotel Stein guests come for a long weekend. They land on Friday afternoon, want to be up on the rooftop by evening and fly home on Sunday without any rush. The Staatsbrücke is a junction where everything can change within a few minutes. A coach stopping by the river, a delivery van outside a shop on the Platzl or an event on the old-town side is all it takes for traffic to stand still. That is why our chauffeurs prefer to call or message you shortly before a hotel pickup rather than wait double-parked for minutes. You come out of the lobby, the car pulls up, and the luggage is loaded within a minute.
In the evening the right bank around Steingasse and Linzer Gasse is lively, bars and restaurants are full, and many guests walk across the bridge from the rooftop or the old town. For pickups after 10 pm we therefore like to agree a clear meeting point, either directly outside the hotel or at a quieter spot on the embankment. It saves searching and phone calls, especially when it rains.
Our most practical advice for departure day: if you fly around midday, avoid leaving in the late-morning rush when delivery traffic and excursion coaches are on the move. When you book, we suggest a pickup time that suits your flight and the season. During the summer festival and in Advent we plan more generously on purpose. That leaves time for a coffee at the airport instead of a rush.

More than the ride from the airport
From Giselakai you can reach most sights on foot. Across the Staatsbrücke you are in Getreidegasse within minutes, Mirabell Gardens are a short walk away on the same bank, and Steingasse with its old houses starts practically behind the hotel. So you will not need a car for the old town itself. A chauffeur becomes useful where distances grow longer or evenings run late.
Popular choices are rides to restaurants and country inns on the edge of the city, for example towards the Gaisberg, Anif or Hellbrunn, where getting back without a driver would be a hassle. Half-day trips into the Salzkammergut are just as popular: Lake Wolfgang with St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang is about an hour away, and Hallstatt takes around an hour and a half. We collect you from the hotel in the morning and bring you back in time for sunset on the rooftop.
If you would like to see the city with some background, you can combine your stay with a private city tour or a Sound of Music tour. For guests short on time this is a good way to see places outside the centre, such as Schloss Leopoldskron or Hellbrunn Palace with its trick fountains, without studying timetables.
In winter some Hotel Stein guests travel on into the mountains. After a few days in the city they head for Zell am See, Bad Gastein or Obertauern. We offer these rides at a flat rate too, with room for skis and boot bags. Conversely, many finish their ski holiday with two nights in Salzburg before flying home via Munich or Vienna.
If you arrive via Munich, the drive takes around 1 hour 45 minutes, longer when the A8 is busy. From Vienna it is about 3 hours 15 minutes along the West Autobahn.
