The drive from the airport to Schloss Fuschl is one of my favourite routes. After ten minutes of city traffic the landscape opens up on the B158, and when the lake appears beyond Hof bei Salzburg I almost always hear the same quiet astonishment in the rear-view mirror. Many guests arrive off long-haul flights, and this half hour is their first real impression of the Salzkammergut. That is why I make a point of driving it calmly.
What many travellers do not realise: during the summer festival season and on fine weekends, the B158 towards the Wolfgangsee gets busy. If you only start looking for a car at the baggage carousel, you lose valuable time. With a pre-booked transfer I am already waiting in the arrivals hall, the car is cooled or pre-heated, and we are on the road before any queues form. On departure I coordinate with the front desk and pull up to the entrance to the minute, with the luggage loaded before the guests have finished checking out.
My tip for your stay: set aside a day for Hallstatt or St. Wolfgang. The Final Kilometres to the Castle: What Your Chauffeur Knows
For us, the approach to Rosewood Schloss Fuschl does not begin at the hotel gate but at the Guggenthal roundabout above the city. The B158, the Wolfgangsee Strasse, is the only direct link between Salzburg and Lake Fuschl, and it has a rhythm you need to know: on weekdays between 7 and 9 am, commuter traffic from the Salzkammergut pushes into the city; on summer weekends from about 10 am it flows the other way, when half of Salzburg heads for the lakes. Land at the airport at 8:30 and you glide against the stream, checking in at the castle by 9:15. Need to head back into town on a Friday at 4 pm? Build in a 15-minute buffer — which is exactly what we do automatically when planning your return leg.
In Hof bei Salzburg itself, the castle access road branches off the B158 discreetly — signposted, but easy to miss if you don't know the turn onto the Schlossstrasse. The narrow avenue down to the peninsula is hotel territory: the forecourt in front of the historic tower is reserved for drop-off, alighting and luggage handover, with longer parking handled by the hotel's valet team. Your chauffeur announces you to the doorman on request, hands your luggage directly to the bellman and moves the car off — you never touch a thing. During events at the castle, such as summer Saturday weddings, the forecourt is temporarily run one-way; we know that in advance, too.
The route changes character with the seasons. During the Salzburg Festival from late July to late August, many castle guests commute to evening performances at the Festspielhaus. The return drive after the opera, usually between 10 and 11 pm, is gloriously empty; the outbound run around 5:30 pm, however, coincides with rush-hour traffic at the Gaisberg tunnel. In winter, ski Saturdays are added to the mix: the B158 continues to St. Gilgen and the Postalm, and on fine-weather weekends in January and February traffic backs up from Hof in the morning. In Advent, the Christmas markets in Salzburg and the atmospheric market in St. Wolfgang draw extra excursion traffic onto the road.
An airport pickup runs to a well-rehearsed minute-by-minute script. Your chauffeur tracks the flight number, is standing with a name board in the arrivals hall of Salzburg's compact terminal by the time you land, and walks you the few metres to the car. Leaving the airport, we take either the A1 to the Thalgau exit or the city route through the Gaisberg tunnel — whichever is faster at that hour. After roughly 25 minutes, just past Hof, the first view of turquoise-green Lake Fuschl opens up — a moment we deliberately don't rush: on request we pause briefly at the viewpoint bay before the castle drive for a first photograph.
Local knowledge pays off for excursions from the castle, too. Hallstatt is about 55 minutes away via Bad Ischl, and if you leave before 9 am you will experience the village before the day-trip coaches arrive. St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen are practically on the doorstep, and the drive along the Wolfgangsee is one of Austria's finest half-day routes. For Munich or MUC airport we allow two hours via the A1 and A8, noting that border checks at Walserberg can add waiting time on peak travel Saturdays — which is why we always plan MUC departures with a generous margin.

The drive to Rosewood Schloss Fuschl follows the B158 along the shore of Lake Fuschl, roughly 25 minutes from central Salzburg and 35 to 45 minutes from Salzburg Airport. The resort access road branches off the main road shortly before Hof bei Salzburg. Your chauffeur announces the arrival to the resort gatehouse in advance, so the barrier opens without waiting and the vehicle can proceed straight to the castle forecourt.
At the forecourt, the resort's own team takes your luggage directly from the vehicle and delivers it to your room, so there is nothing to carry yourself. Ski equipment and golf bags are handled too.
