Why Hallein
Salt made Salzburg rich – and its roots lie just outside the city, on the Dürrnberg above Hallein.
Hallein lies just about 20 kilometres south of Salzburg, roughly 25 minutes' drive away. On the Dürrnberg above the town lie the Salzwelten – the world's oldest show mine. The Celts mined salt here over 2,500 years ago, and it was this "white gold" that for centuries underpinned the wealth and power of Salzburg's prince-archbishops.
The tour follows the same proven concept as Berchtesgaden but is the Austrian and older version: you put on miners' clothing, ride the mine train into the mountain, slide down two original wooden slides and cross the illuminated underground salt lake on a raft. A special detail: underground you even cross the border between Austria and Germany.
The mine includes a reconstructed Celtic village on the Dürrnberg that brings the long history of salt mining to life – a worthwhile stop especially for families and the historically curious. The whole tour takes about 90 minutes and runs year-round at constantly cool temperatures.
After the mine, a detour into Hallein's old town is worthwhile, with its narrow lanes, the Celtic Museum and the Salzach promenade. Franz Xaver Gruber, composer of "Silent Night", also worked here – his grave and a small museum recall him.
This tour is shorter than the big full-day trips and works perfectly as a half-day outing that pairs well with a relaxed afternoon in Salzburg. It is also ideal in changeable weather, as the main part takes place underground.

Many guests ask for Berchtesgaden because they found it online. Yet the world's oldest salt mine sits right outside Salzburg in Hallein – a shorter drive, often fewer crowds, the same fascination with slides and a salt lake. If you're short on time, this is the one.
My tip: combine the mine with Hallein's old town. It's wonderfully unhurried, with good coffee on the Salzach and the Silent Night connection many don't know about. It's exactly the kind of authentic Salzburg surroundings people otherwise overlook.
For families the half-day version is ideal: into the cool mine with the slides in the morning, back to Salzburg at midday, ice cream on Mozartplatz in the afternoon. A full day of experiences without the kids getting tired.
