Not a museum in the classic sense, but a walk-through artwork – and one of Austria's most-visited attractions.
Swarovski Crystal Worlds lies in Wattens, Tyrol, about 165 kilometres west of Salzburg. Created in 1995 for the company's 100th anniversary by the artist André Heller, it has been expanded again and again since. Today it ranks among Austria's most-visited sights.
The entrance is legendary: a grass-covered giant's head with a waterfall pouring from its mouth. Beyond it the path leads into the underground Chambers of Wonder – 17 rooms designed by artists such as Brian Eno, Alexander McQueen, Yayoi Kusama and Studio Job. Each room is its own world of mirrors, light and crystal.
In the expansive garden stands the "Crystal Cloud" of around 800,000 hand-mounted crystals above a black mirror pond – a photo motif found nowhere else. For families there is a four-storey play tower with climbing nets that easily keeps children busy for an hour while adults stroll the gardens.
As the drive is about two and a half hours, it pairs well with a short stop in Innsbruck – at the Golden Roof in the old town or with a view of the Nordkette range. That turns the drive into a varied day through Tyrol.
This tour suits families, art lovers and anyone who wants to see something other than mountains and lakes. How much time you spend in Crystal Worlds and how much in Innsbruck we agree together when you inquire.

"Combine Wattens with Innsbruck – the long drive only pays off as a full Tyrolean day."

Crystal Worlds alone doesn't quite justify the two-and-a-half-hour drive for many guests. My advice: make it a full Tyrolean day. Crystal Worlds in the morning, then 20 minutes on to Innsbruck for the old town, the Golden Roof and a coffee with a view of the Nordkette. The distance then never feels like pure driving.
For families the play tower in the garden is a real godsend. While the children climb, adults have time for the gardens and the Crystal Cloud in peace. Deliberately plan a little more time here – it's the most relaxed part of the visit.
And a photo tip: the Crystal Cloud looks best on a slightly cloudy day or in the late afternoon, when the light is softer. In harsh midday sun the sparkle overpowers the reflections.
