On paper that sounds like a simple hop; in practice it is one of central Europe's more demanding alpine crossings: the A10 Tauern motorway over the Radstadt Tauern and the Katschberg, the descent into Carinthia, then the Karawanken tunnel as the border between Austria and Slovenia, and finally the Slovenian A2 through the Sava valley into the capital. Attempt it by public transport and you collect changes in Villach or Jesenice and lose half a day depending on the connection. First-hand route knowledge
What really happens on the Salzburg Ljubljana route
For us the route falls into four sections, each with its own character. Section one is the A10 from the Salzburg interchange down to Villach: the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels, serious altitude, and snow-covered lanes between Flachau and Radstadt in winter. Section two is the short stretch of A2 towards the Karawanken tunnel, which backs up on summer Saturdays. Section three is Slovenia as far as Kranj, suddenly flat and green with the Julian Alps on the horizon. Section four is the approach into Ljubljana itself, where a ring road wraps the city and the right exit decides whether you spend five or twenty-five minutes in local traffic.
Ljubljana's old town is largely car-free. Guests who assume they can be dropped at the front door of a boutique hotel on the Ljubljanica embankment are usually wrong. We know the permitted approaches via Poljanska and Karlovska, the delivery time windows, and the spots where a brief stop to unload is tolerated. For properties around Preseren Square or the Triple Bridge we normally set down at the nearest drivable edge and walk you and your bags the last stretch. Do this in a rental car and you discover the rules at 10 pm with four suitcases in the boot.
The seasons have clear patterns. From mid-July to the end of August the Karawanken tunnel is one of central Europe's tightest bottlenecks at weekends, because half of Austria and southern Germany is heading for the Croatian coast. We then set off deliberately early, often at six, or in extreme cases route over the Loibl pass, which is the prettier drive anyway. Winter reverses it: the critical zone moves to the Salzburg section when it snows, while Slovenia is usually clear. Our cars run winter tyres from October to April, chains are on board, and we build in more margin whenever the warning level goes orange.
Luggage genuinely matters on this route, because it is so often one leg of a longer journey. A couple with two large cases, cabin bags and a ski bag does not fit into whatever vehicle an anonymous online booking sends. So we ask in advance how many pieces and what kind, then assign an E-Class, V-Class or Vito accordingly. We regularly carry ski equipment, golf bags, prams and musical instruments; child seats in every group are provided free of charge, but we need to know about them in advance because of the space they take.
What first-timers typically misjudge: they treat the drive as pure logistics and miss that it crosses one of Europe's finest alpine corridors. The Hohe Tauern opening up before the Tauern tunnel, Lake Wörthersee at Velden, the Karawanken standing like a wall at the border. A coffee stop in Velden or a detour to Lake Bled costs forty minutes and turns a transfer into the first real day of the holiday. I have been driving the Salzburg Ljubljana connection for more than ten years, sometimes three times a week in summer. The difference between a good run and a miserable one is almost always decided before departure, not on the road. A guest who tells me the night before that he needs to be at the congress centre by ten gets a 6:45 departure and we arrive relaxed. A guest who starts at eight because it sounds more comfortable may well be sitting in front of the Karawanken tunnel in July.
My personal tip for first-timers: book the Ljubljana to Salzburg return at the same time. It is the leg most people underestimate. On departure day the old town is often closed to traffic, the weather can turn, and a train with two changes is no fun with suitcases. If the return is already in my schedule, I know your address, your luggage and your flight, and I can time the departure precisely to your take-off in Salzburg or Munich.
One more thing that costs nothing: tell me what the journey is for. A wedding couple, a business delegation and a family with two tired children need three different drives. Child seats and boosters in all groups are provided free of charge. Do you drive the route in winter and in snow?+
Yes, all year and around the clock. In winter the critical section lies between Golling and the Katschberg, not in Slovenia. Our cars run winter tyres from October to April and carry chains, and our chauffeurs know the diversions when the Tauern tunnel closes. At warning level orange we prefer to move the departure an hour earlier.
