The route runs west on the A10 Tauern motorway, through the Inn valley on the A12, up to the Brenner motorway A13 and down the Italian A22 through the Eisack valley into Bolzano. It is one of the finest alpine crossings in Europe, and also one of the busiest. Route knowledge, first hand
The Brenner, the Eisack valley and the final thirty kilometres
The route falls into four very different sections, and knowing them makes planning easier. From Salzburg to Woergl the A10 and A12 usually flow well; then comes the Inn valley with its lorry convoys and the well-known metered access controls near Kufstein and on the approach to the Brenner. The climb from Innsbruck over the Europabrücke via Schönberg and Matrei is spectacular, but in winter it is the most weather-sensitive part. Beyond the pass the A22 drops through Sterzing and Brixen into the Eisack valley, and it gets milder with every metre lost. When Salzburg is under snow, Bolzano often greets you with twelve degrees under its arcades.
The most common first-timer mistake is assuming South Tyrol is one place. Bolzano to Castelrotto is half an hour of switchbacks; Merano lies west along the MeBo expressway; Selva in Val Gardena is another long haul up the valley; and Bruneck below Kronplatz is reached along the Puster valley road from Brixen. So we plan backwards from your actual address, not from Bolzano centre. A hotel in Alta Badia means the Brixen exit and the Gader valley; a house in Siusi allo Sciliar means the Waidbruck exit and the bends up towards the Alpe di Siusi.
Winter Saturdays are the hardest days of the year. Half of central Europe changes apartments on the same morning, the Brenner backs up, and the approaches to Val Gardena and the Gader valley crawl from late morning onwards. We deliberately set early departures then, often before six, and switch to the old Brenner road where it helps. In summer the problem simply moves: the Dolomite passes and the wine road between Kaltern and Tramin fill up at weekends, and holiday traffic heading for Lake Garda loads the Adige valley.
Luggage genuinely matters on this route. Ski bags, board bags, prams, and in summer hiking packs plus the cases of wine collected at a cellar on the way home. We agree the vehicle class in advance so nothing ends up on anyone's lap: the E-Class for two guests with normal luggage, the V-Class for families and ski groups. Child seats in every size travel with us when you flag them in the enquiry. For return runs to an early Salzburg flight we build in noticeably more buffer, because the mountain section before sunrise allows no reliable forecast.
On the border itself: Austria and Italy are both in the Schengen area, so there is no routine passport control, though spot checks do happen at the Brenner. Please carry valid photo ID. Italian motorway tolls, the Brenner toll and the Austrian vignette are all inside your flat rate, as is winter equipment to Italian specification, which is mandatory on the A22 in the cold season. That is another point where hire cars regularly fall short and where guests end up stopped at a check.

I have been driving Salzburg to South Tyrol for more than twelve years, in winter often twice a week. What I have learned: the Brenner rewards early starters. At half past five in the morning the climb to Matrei is empty; at ten on a changeover Saturday it is a car park. When guests tell me they would like a lie-in, I explain openly what that costs in driving time, and then we decide together.
The second point is the final half hour. Many hotels in Castelrotto, Siusi, Selva or Corvara sit on roads that look harmless on a map and are in reality steep, narrow and iced over in January. For addresses I do not know, I phone the hotel beforehand and ask about the actual approach. It sounds trivial, but it regularly saves twenty minutes of searching in the dark with guests on board.
And third: take one good break instead of three bad ones. I like to stop just after Sterzing, where the coffee is already Italian and the view is still alpine. After that we run through to the front door. Guests who treat this drive as part of the holiday rather than an obstacle arrive far more relaxed, and that is exactly what we are here for.
