Arriving by the Pond: Your Transfer to Schloss Leopoldskron
Travelling alone, as a seminar group or as a wedding party: we collect you at Salzburg Airport and bring you along quiet Leopoldskronstrasse to the gate in around 15 minutes. Flight tracking, luggage help and a flat rate included.
A Rococo Palace, a Pond and a Journey That Deserves Calm
Anyone driving up to Schloss Leopoldskron for the first time soon realises that this place is different from the hotels in the old town. Instead of lanes, horse carriages and crowds, there are meadows, old trees and the still Leopoldskron pond, which mirrors the pale facade of the palace. Behind it the Hohensalzburg Fortress rises on its rock, close at hand and yet far enough away that none of the bustle of Getreidegasse reaches you.
The palace was built in the 18th century under Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, whose name it still carries. In the early 20th century it was acquired by Max Reinhardt, one of the founders of the Salzburg Festival, who turned it into a meeting place for artists, actors and thinkers from around the world. Since the post-war years it has been the home of Salzburg Global Seminar, an organisation that brings professionals from many countries together here for multi-day programmes.
Many travellers know the view across the pond without ever having been there: the exterior scenes around the water are famous worldwide from The Sound of Music. So we often hear the question in the car whether this is really the spot where the children fell into the water. Our chauffeurs happily share what they know about the filming locations and, on request, point out the side of the pond from which the well-known shots were taken.
As a hotel, the estate works on two levels. Most guest rooms are in the Meierhof, the former farm building next to the palace, while the palace itself, with its historic halls and a small number of suites, is used mainly for events, seminars and celebrations. For us this means one thing: we clarify in advance whether you step out at the Meierhof, whether reception there is expecting you, or whether a group should first be taken to the palace itself.
This is where an ordinary ride and a well-planned transfer part ways. Seminar participants often travel from different countries, land at the same airport within a few hours of each other, and should still arrive together and relaxed. Wedding parties need shuttles between the old town, the church and the palace that keep to a schedule that is often planned to the minute. And anyone who simply wants a few quiet days by the pond does not want to work out, straight after landing, how to reach a residential street in the south of the city.
VPC Premium Transfer takes care of all of this at a flat rate that you see upfront in the booking calculator. We are a private chauffeur company based in Salzburg and drive to the palace regularly, without being in any official partnership with the hotel. You book directly with us, we agree the details with you and, where it helps, with your event organiser too.
Leopoldskronstrasse: a Quiet Residential Street, Not a Hotel Forecourt
The palace sits on Leopoldskronstrasse in the Leopoldskron-Moos district, south-west of the old town. The approach runs through a quiet residential area of family homes, gardens and narrow roads shared with cyclists and walkers. There is no wide forecourt like at a city hotel, which is exactly why our chauffeurs drive here with particular care and at a gentle pace.
Salzburg Airport is only a few kilometres away. Depending on the time of day, the drive takes about 12 to 20 minutes, usually around a quarter of an hour. The route does not cross the old town but follows the edge of the city towards the south, which largely avoids inner-city congestion. Salzburg Hauptbahnhof can also be reached in roughly a quarter of an hour when traffic around the centre allows.
For groups, the access road is the decisive factor. A large coach does not always fit comfortably into the narrow streets, whereas one or several Mercedes vans can drive right up to the entrance. For seminars and weddings we therefore prefer to plan with several vehicles arriving in staggered slots rather than a single large vehicle that might have to stop out on the road.
On foot, the old town is around half an hour away, a lovely walk along the pond and through the Nonntal quarter. In the evening, however, with luggage, in formal wear or in the rain, a chauffeur is clearly the more comfortable option. That is why many guests use us not only for the airport transfer but also for evening rides to concerts, restaurants or the Festival halls.
How We Coordinate Seminar and Wedding Groups
- 01
Share the participant list
You or your organiser send us names, flight numbers and arrival times. A simple spreadsheet is enough, we handle the allocation to vehicles.
- 02
Group the arrival waves
We combine guests whose flights land close together into sensible runs. Nobody waits for hours at the airport and no vehicle travels half empty.
- 03
Confirm flat rates and the plan
You receive a written schedule with vehicles, pickup times and flat rates. Changes to individual flights are coordinated with you as they happen.
- 04
Welcome with a group sign
In arrivals your chauffeur waits with the name of the event or the couple. Flights are tracked and delays are absorbed into the plan.
- 05
Staggered arrival at the palace
Vehicles reach the Meierhof in staggered slots so check-in runs without a crush and the quiet access road is never blocked.
- 06
Plan the return in batches
At the end we take every participant, sorted by departure time, to Salzburg Airport, to Munich or to the Hauptbahnhof.

What We Have Learned Driving to Schloss Leopoldskron
VPC Chauffeur-Team
Chauffeurs and dispatch, VPC Premium Transfer
With seminar groups, arrival day almost always looks the same: the first guests land in the morning, the last late in the evening, and in between a few come by train from Vienna or Munich. We have learned that getting the participant list early pays off. It lets us build arrival waves and drive guests who land only half an hour apart together, without anyone waiting for long.
At weddings the schedule is sacred. Guests often stay in hotels in the old town or around the Mirabell Gardens, the ceremony takes place in a church and the celebration is at the palace. We build a reserve into such days, because photos by the pond tend to take longer than planned, and we keep a vehicle ready for late returns so nobody is left standing alone at the palace after midnight.
And a note on the approach: Leopoldskronstrasse is a residential street. We drive slowly, stop only where it is permitted and sensible, and avoid leaving vehicles waiting on the road. The neighbours appreciate it, and your guests notice the difference in the calm atmosphere that defines this place.

Practical Tips for Your Stay by the Pond
When booking, let us know whether you are staying in the Meierhof or in the palace and whether you are arriving for an event. That tells us where to drop you and whether to coordinate with an organiser. The official address is Leopoldskronstrasse 56 to 58, 5020 Salzburg.
For travellers arriving via Munich, a private transfer is often the most comfortable solution. Depending on traffic the drive takes around 1 h 45 and runs via the A8 straight into the south of Salzburg, with no change of train at the station. Coming from Vienna, allow roughly 3 h 15, with a break along the way if you wish.
During the Salzburg Festival weeks and in Advent, the city centre gets noticeably busier. Because the palace lies away from the old town you will notice little of it, but for rides into town we allow a little more time. For evening events we recommend booking the return at the same time, so your chauffeur is ready at the agreed hour.
All prices are flat rates per vehicle, not per person. You can see your exact price in the booking calculator, and for larger groups needing several vehicles we are happy to prepare a combined quote.
