The critical section of the Salzburg to Altenmarkt im Pongau run is not in Altenmarkt at all, it is much earlier. Between Golling and the Pass Lueg the Salzach valley narrows sharply; that stretch collects winter accidents and summer queues in front of the tunnels. Travel on a Saturday in high season and you also meet the classic changeover wave: between roughly nine and one, half of Germany rolls south on the A10, and the same happens in reverse in the afternoon. So we deliberately build buffer into Saturday jobs and we know the alternative on the B159 through Golling and Werfen, longer but far more reliable when the motorway stops. For guests it simply means we quote a realistic arrival time rather than a hopeful one.

Altenmarkt's local geography is simple but has two traps. First, there is barely any gap between Altenmarkt and Radstadt; the two run almost into each other and many apartment addresses look confusingly similar in a satnav. Second, Zauchensee is a chapter of its own: the approach from Altenmarkt, or around via Flachauwinkl, climbs noticeably, it is cleared in winter but demanding after fresh snow, and the base station car parks fill by mid morning. If your accommodation is up in Zauchensee, please say so when you book so we send an all wheel drive vehicle and the chauffeur builds the climb into the timing.

On luggage, almost every winter guest underestimates the same thing. A family of four with four ski bags, four boot bags and four suitcases simply does not fit in a saloon, even if the seat count works on paper. Ski bags are long and awkward rather than heavy; they need length, not volume. That is why we ask about ski and board equipment on every booking and, in case of doubt, allocate a V-Class or send a second car. If you plan to rent equipment locally, mention it, because it changes the return calculation compared with the outbound leg. Wet ski boots and damp clothing on the way home are a real consideration too, and our vehicles are prepared for it.

An honest word about weather. The Pongau gets a lot of snow in winter, but the A10 is one of the best maintained motorways in Austria. Genuine trouble rarely happens on the motorway; it happens on the last kilometres to individual chalets, where driveways are steep, narrow and sometimes uncleared. If your host writes that the access road needs all wheel drive in winter, believe them and tell us. In spring, around April, it can rain in the valley while it snows up in Zauchensee, which regularly catches guests out. And Altenmarkt is far from empty in summer: Therme Amade, the thermal spa in the village, draws families, and bike and hiking guests fill the rest, so Sunday evenings on the A10 can be dense well outside the ski season.

The most common first timer mistake is planning the return from Altenmarkt im Pongau to Salzburg. People count the 55 minutes of driving, add two hours of check-in, and forget that on departure Saturday returning rental gear, handing back keys and loading the car easily eat half an hour, and that the A10 is at its busiest at exactly that moment. For Saturday morning flights we suggest a pickup that looks more generous than it feels. Better to sit calmly in the airport cafe than to watch the clock in a queue at Golling.
