Transfer Salzburg to Bad Gastein

The drive itself is unspectacular, and that is exactly its advantage. From Salzburg Süd you roll along the A10 Tauern motorway through the Salzach valley, past Golling and Werfen with Hohenwerfen castle on your left, through the Golling tunnel and on towards Bischofshofen. At the Bischofshofen exit we switch to the B311 across the Pongau basin through St. Johann to Lend, where the Gastein valley branches off as a narrow gorge. From Lend the B167 climbs noticeably, first through the Klamm, then through Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, and finally the last six kilometres up to Bad Gastein. The run takes roughly one hour on a clear road, and perhaps fifteen minutes more on a winter Saturday morning.

The classic first timer mistake does not happen on the motorway but in the last five minutes. Bad Gastein is not a place with a main street and a car park in front of it, it is a town built into a gorge. Between the upper level around the congress centre and the lower level by the waterfall there are well over a hundred metres of elevation, connected by tight hairpins and staircases. Two hotels can be fifty metres apart as the crow flies and still require several minutes of driving because a rock face sits between them. We know the access roads, the one way rules and the courtyards where a vehicle may actually stop, and we set you down at the right door rather than thirty steps below it.

Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein are constantly confused, including by satnavs and booking portals. Bad Hofgastein lies about six kilometres down the valley: flat, broad and family friendly, with the Alpentherme and access to the Schlossalm area. Bad Gastein sits higher, steep, glamorous and a little rawer, with Stubnerkogel and Graukogel and the waterfall running through the middle of town. We ask for the hotel name and street on every booking, because the wrong entry means six kilometres and ten minutes of difference. The route changes noticeably with the season. From Christmas until early March, Saturday is the Ski amadé changeover day, traffic backs up between Bischofshofen and St. Johann, and hotel driveways are full of loading and unloading between 3 and 5 pm, so we deliberately schedule winter runs earlier or later. In spring, snowmelt in the Gasteiner Klamm occasionally brings rockfall closures with light controlled single lane sections. In high summer the waterfall, the Stubnerkogel suspension bridge and the Graukogel trails are the draw and the road is relaxed. The Tauernbahn car shuttle train from Boeckstein is irrelevant for arrivals from Salzburg, but matters for guests continuing into Carinthia, and we are happy to advise in advance.

Two practical points that decide most days. First, luggage: ski bags, board bags and children's equipment fit in our V Class without anyone holding a case on their knees, so please state the number of pieces when you enquire. Second, the return. Guests travelling from Bad Gastein to Salzburg airport often plan too tightly. We allow one hour of pure driving from the hotel plus a buffer for local traffic and winter road conditions, and collect you early enough that you check in calmly instead of doing arithmetic at the Klamm.
