The drive itself runs almost entirely on the motorway, past Golling and Werfen with a view of Hohenwerfen Castle, before we leave the A10 at the Flachau exit. In winter that is a real advantage: the Tauern motorway is cleared and gritted around the clock, so even when it is snowing we travel reliably and safely. In the cold season our vehicles are of course fitted with winter tyres, and we carry snow chains when conditions call for them.
Flachau is part of Ski amade and Snow Space Salzburg, one of the largest connected ski areas in Austria. I have driven the route to Flachau for many winters, and it remains one of my favourites. The reason is simple: it is short, fast and almost entirely motorway. While other ski resorts demand long mountain roads, in Flachau we are usually there in around 50 minutes. My tip for the journey: on weekend arrival days book with a little buffer, because on the classic changeover days the A10 can briefly get busier just before the Flachau exit.
There is no need to skimp on equipment. Our V-Class easily swallows several pairs of skis, boots and the suitcases of an entire family. If you travel with children, tell us their ages and number in advance and the right child seat will be installed and ready. When it snows I drive with foresight, on winter tyres and, when conditions require, with chains in the boot.
For the return, simply give me your departure time at Salzburg Airport and I will plan the pickup in Flachau so that we reach the terminal calmly and with time to spare. If your incoming flight or your timing slips, no problem, I am tracking it anyway. That way your ski holiday begins and ends exactly as calmly as it should.
