Radstadt is one of those destinations our guests look at twice. About 75 kilometres south of Salzburg Airport, roughly 55 minutes on the A10 Tauern motorway to the Radstadt exit, lies one of the very few Austrian towns whose 13th-century wall and towers still stand complete. And that same town is a fully fledged Ski amadé base. What we have actually learned on the Salzburg Radstadt route
The micro-geography of Radstadt decides the last five minutes of the drive. The historic centre sits entirely inside the town wall, and inside it a regime of one-way streets, pedestrian zones and time-limited loading bays sends unfamiliar drivers into dead ends with impressive regularity. Depending on your address we either enter through the lower gate or stay on the bypass by the Enns bridge, then stop as close to your door as the rules allow. For hotels north towards Altenmarkt we do not enter the old town at all and stay on the Salzburger Straße instead. If you are staying in an apartment in Forstau, in the outlying hamlets or up towards the Rossbrand, tell us at booking: those access roads are steep and in winter cleared only as far as the last turning point, so we assign the vehicle and the time accordingly.
The A10 Tauern motorway is not a neutral factor on this stretch. Between Golling and the Pass Lueg the valley narrows, and on peak-season Saturdays the arrival and departure traffic from Germany and the Netherlands piles up in exactly that section. So we plan changeover days differently from midweek: either significantly earlier, or we divert onto the B159 and B99 for a stretch when the traffic reports justify it. Conversely a Tuesday morning in January is usually a completely relaxed run that even beats the 55 minutes. We will tell you honestly when you should leave rather than confirm a convenient time that will not hold.
Weather in the Enns valley is a chapter of its own. It can be raining in Salzburg while snow starts falling past the tunnel near Werfen and the road turns wintry from Eben im Pongau onwards. Our cars are winter-equipped year round, the chauffeurs know the corners that ice up first, and when it snows we simply build in more time instead of driving in a hurry. What guests underestimate: early morning fog in the Salzach valley often costs more time than snow does. For early departures from SZG we therefore pick you up more generously in winter than pure driving time would suggest.
Luggage is the second classic stumbling block. A family of four with four ski bags, helmets, boots and suitcases does not fit into every vehicle, whatever an online calculator claims. Tell us the number of ski bags and snowboards separately from the suitcases and you get the V-Class van rather than the E-Class, and nobody stands in front of an undersized boot at 10 pm in minus eight degrees. Ski rental is available in Radstadt right by the lift, which visibly shrinks what you have to carry. Child seats and boosters are provided free of charge, but we need age and weight in advance.
What first-timers most often misjudge: Radstadt is not a base station with a village attached but a genuine small town with schools, a pharmacy, bakeries and a railway station. The gondola sits at the edge of town, ski buses link Radstadt-Altenmarkt with Zauchensee and Flachau, and anyone heading to Obertauern climbs the B99, which in snowfall happily takes twice as long as expected. That is exactly why many guests add day trips to the neighbouring ski areas to their airport transfer, or book the return Radstadt to Salzburg with a stop in Hallein or the old town before the flight.

I have been driving the Salzburg to Radstadt route for more than twelve years, in January often several times a day. What strikes me is that guests almost never underestimate the distance; they underestimate the transitions. The flight lands on time, the bags arrive late, it is snowing outside, and suddenly the half hour saved on paper is gone. That is exactly why I build the buffer at the start of a journey, not at the end.
My second piece of advice concerns the return leg. If you want to leave Radstadt at six in the morning on departure day, do not simply count driving time. In winter the windscreen is frozen, the chalet access road has fresh snow on it, and the A10 near Werfen sometimes still has a snow-clearing convoy ahead of it. In those cases I would rather collect you fifteen minutes early and share a calm coffee at the airport than hurry you through a bend.
And a personal note: make use of the fact that Radstadt is a real town. The market square inside the walls is at its best in the late afternoon, when the towers stand in backlight and the skiers are still on the mountain. If you tell me at booking that you have a little time, I will plan the arrival so you do not miss that moment.
