What guests only learn about Ramsau after their first drive
Ramsau is not a village with a single centre but a high plateau stretching roughly twelve kilometres from east to west. Districts such as Ramsau Ort, Kulm, Leiten, Rössing, Vorberg and Türlwand lie far apart, and many hotels, guesthouses and chalets carry near identical names. Type only "Ramsau am Dachstein" into a navigation system and you can easily end up five to seven kilometres from your accommodation, often on the wrong side of a climb. That is why every booking we take asks for the district, the house number and, where it exists, the nearest bus stop. That single extra question regularly saves a quarter of an hour of searching in the dark.
The climb up from the Ennstal is the part self drivers underestimate. As far as Schladming the B320 runs wide and flat along the valley floor, then come roughly seven kilometres of hairpins with real altitude gain. With fresh snow, with rain at zero degrees, or after an evening temperature drop, that ramp turns slick before the ploughs come round a second time. Our vehicles run winter tyres with proper tread depth all season, chains sit in the boot from November to April, and our chauffeurs drive this ramp several times a week, year after year. We know where you need to carry momentum and where you very much should not.
The route changes character with the season. In January and February Schladming backs up around the Planai and on race weekends, especially the Nightrace, when access roads close at short notice. On those nights we plan an alternative approach via Rohrmoos or Pichl and start earlier. In summer the road up to the Dachstein glacier cable car fills from late morning with day visitors heading for the Sky Walk and the Ice Palace. If you want the glacier in peace, be at the valley station before nine, and that is exactly how we set your pickup time if you ask us to.
Luggage on this route is rarely light. Cross-country guests arrive with two pairs of skis, skating and classic, plus poles, a wax case and training bags. Alpine skiers bring ski bags, helmets and boots. Summer guests carry via ferrata sets, ropes and hiking poles. For ski equipment we default to the V-Class with a ski box, or a two vehicle combination, and we ask for an honest count of your bags at enquiry rather than an optimistic one. Child seats and infant carriers are provided free of charge, but they must be reserved in advance because in winter almost all of them are out on the road.
Finally, the weather above the valley. Ramsau often sits above the fog while Salzburg and the Ennstal stay grey. Guests who set off in thick low cloud assume the day is lost and stand in full sunshine beneath the Dachstein south face an hour later. The reverse happens too: it can snow on the plateau while rain falls below, adding ten to twenty minutes to the drive. I have been driving the route into the Ennstal for over twelve years, in winter often several times a day. The first thing I tell guests: give me the district, not just the place name. Ramsau spreads across an entire plateau, and two properties with near identical addresses can be six kilometres and two hundred vertical metres apart. If I know beforehand, I take the correct approach road instead of turning around in the dark.
The second point is time. Many guests book the return to Salzburg Airport too tightly because all they picture is the 95 kilometres. In January the first seven kilometres downhill can take me as long as the forty that follow, if a snow plough is working ahead. So for morning flights I plan deliberately generously. I would much rather we drink a coffee together at the airport than have you running to check-in.
And the third: tell me honestly what you are carrying. Two sets of cross-country skis, poles, a wax case and three suitcases do not fit in a saloon, however optimistic it sounds on the phone. With accurate information I send a V-Class with a roof box and loading takes five minutes instead of twenty. In the end that is the difference between a journey you talk about and one you never need to think about.
