"The drive through the Pinzgau was already a dream, and the waterfalls immense. The tip about the second platform was spot on."

The water plunges 380 metres in three tiers – the Krimml Waterfalls are the highest in Europe.
A private day tour from Salzburg into the Hohe Tauern National Park. A well-laid waterfall trail leads up alongside the thundering cascades; the fine spray is even considered beneficial for the airways.

A natural spectacle in the far Pinzgau – and one of Austria's most beautiful approach drives.
The Krimml Waterfalls lie in the westernmost corner of the Salzburg region, about 110 kilometres from Salzburg, in the Hohe Tauern National Park. With a total height of 380 metres in three drops they are the highest waterfalls in Europe and one of the most-visited natural monuments in the Alps.
The approach itself is part of the experience: we drive the length of the Salzach valley, past Zell am See and deep into the Oberpinzgau. The landscape grows more alpine with every kilometre until the high mountains of the national park frame the valley.
At the destination the historic waterfall trail – laid out by the Alpine Club in 1879 – climbs in moderate switchbacks alongside the falls. The first viewing platform is only a few minutes away; those who walk all the way to the top fall should allow about 1.5 hours. The path is well surfaced but uphill – sturdy shoes are sensible.
Right by the entrance is the WasserWunderWelt Krimml with an aqua-scenarium and exhibition – a good stop for families or in changeable weather. The fine spray of the falls also has a measurable effect: studies by the University of Salzburg showed the aerosol can ease asthma and allergy symptoms.
This tour suits nature lovers and photographers who want to experience the high mountains without a strenuous hike. How far up you go is up to you – your chauffeur waits relaxed at the car park.

"Go only to the second platform – the spray is strongest there and the morning rainbow is guaranteed."

Chauffeur-guide · Pinzgau
Many visitors set out to reach the very top and end up exhausted. It isn't necessary: the most impressive spots are in the lower third of the trail, especially at the second platform where you're closest to the spray. In the morning the sun sits right and a rainbow almost always forms in the mist.
My second tip concerns clothing: you will get wet. The spray is part of the experience, but a light rain jacket and protection for your camera pay off. We carry umbrellas on board.
And for allergy sufferers: the effect of the Krimml aerosol is well documented. Anyone with hay fever or asthma should deliberately spend a little longer in the lower section of the falls – many report noticeably freer breathing afterwards.
