Why the Untersberg

Salzburg's nearest viewpoint mountain – and the fastest way from the old-town bustle into the high mountains.

The Untersberg rises directly on the southern edge of Salzburg and forms the natural border between Austria and Bavaria. The valley station of the Untersberg cable car in St. Leonhard is only about 15 minutes' drive from the city centre – hardly any viewpoint mountain in the Alps is so easy to reach.

The Untersberg cable car is a traditional aerial tramway that has run since 1961. In about eight minutes it climbs more than 1,300 vertical metres to the mountain station on the Geiereck at 1,776 metres. The ride itself is impressive as the view over the city and the alpine foreland widens ever further.

At the top a 360-degree panorama awaits: to the north lies Salzburg with its fortress and cathedral, to the east the Salzkammergut with its lakes, to the south the snow-capped peaks of the Hohe Tauern and to the west the Bavarian Alps. Several short, well-secured paths lead to viewpoints; the mountain inn at the station invites a stop.

The Untersberg is also a mountain of legend. According to the tale, Emperor Charlemagne sleeps inside the mountain and will one day awaken. Your chauffeur is happy to tell such stories along the way – they give the trip a depth of its own.

As this tour lasts only half a day, it combines wonderfully with other elements – for example the nearby Hellbrunn Palace with its trick fountains, or a relaxed afternoon in Salzburg's old town. It is also ideal for anyone who wants to stand above the clouds without setting aside a whole day.

What most guidebooks skip

"The Untersberg is the best half-day in Salzburg – if the visibility is right. Ask us about the weather in the morning."

With the Untersberg it's all about visibility. On a clear day the panorama is one of the finest in the Eastern Alps – on a dull day you stand in the clouds. So we keep the tour flexible: in the morning we check the mountain forecast and the summit webcam and agree the timing with you. That's the advantage of a private tour over a fixed coach.

My second tip: combine the morning on the mountain with the afternoon at Hellbrunn. The palace with its famous trick fountains lies on the way back and is a refreshing contrast on hot days – cool mountain air above, playful fountains below.

And think in layers: even if it's 30 degrees in the city, it can be windy and much cooler up top. A light jacket belongs in your bag. We have blankets on board, but sturdy shoes are more comfortable on the summit paths.
