The B158 is a beautiful road, but it does not forgive much. From Hof bei Salzburg the climb over the Scharfling ridge begins, then the carriageway drops in wide curves down to the lakeshore. That exact stretch lies in shadow and is the first to freeze in January. In winter we deliberately drive it a gear or two lower and brake before the curves rather than in them. Guests in a freshly collected rental car on summer tyres usually notice the difference far too late. In summer the same road is a postcard drive, though cyclists, motorhomes and tractors then become the real brake.
Inside the village, micro-geography decides the last five minutes. St. Gilgen is built on three levels: the main road above, the old centre with Mozartplatz and the Mozarthaus in the middle, and the lake promenade with the boat pier and the Zwölferhorn valley station below. The centre is partly pedestrian or residents-only, and the lanes around the market square are narrow and busy in summer. We know the hotels and holiday houses along the shore and on Aberseestraße, and we know where a vehicle may genuinely stop so that you are not dragging a suitcase 300 metres over cobblestones.
Three seasonal patterns are worth knowing. On summer weekends traffic backs up in the late afternoon towards Salzburg as day visitors leave the lake, which can easily add 20 minutes on the way to the airport. During Advent and the holidays the picture reverses and the morning flow towards the Salzkammergut is the dense one. During term time the St. Gilgen International School shapes the rhythm: at the start and end of semesters we handle many pick-ups with a great deal of luggage, often with unaccompanied students, for whom we document handovers in writing.
Luggage is almost always a topic on this route. Wolfgangsee guests arrive in winter with ski bags and boot bags, in summer with golf bags, SUP boards or prams. An E-Class comfortably takes two large cases plus two carry-ons; anything beyond that belongs in a V-Class. Please tell us the piece count when you enquire, not in the arrivals hall. ECE-approved child seats and boosters are provided free of charge, but we need the child's age and weight in advance because we actually fit them rather than simply carry them.
What first-timers most often get wrong: St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang are two different villages at two different ends of the same lake. Guests who skim the hotel confirmation end up on the wrong shore and need roughly another 40 minutes by road via Strobl. The second classic is the return buffer to the airport: for winter-season departures we recommend a pick-up three hours before take-off, because Salzburg on a January or February Saturday is Austria's busiest regional airport. The third is the Zwölferhorn cable car, built in 1957 and rebuilt in 2019: it closes in storms or icing, which rearranges day plans at short notice, and we simply adjust pick-up times without debate.

I have been driving the Salzburg to St. Gilgen route for more than twelve years, usually several times a week. The sentence I hear most often, as we round the first bend after Scharfling and the Wolfgangsee opens up below, is: that was quick. That is exactly what makes this village special for Salzburg travellers. Half an hour after baggage reclaim you are standing on a lake promenade with boats rocking at the pier and the Zwölferhorn rising straight above you.
My most important recommendation concerns the return. Guests book the inbound leg carefully and then improvise St. Gilgen to Salzburg. That usually works until the February Saturday when half of Europe leaves the mountains at once. Book both directions together and your vehicle is at the door on departure day, even when it snows and the bus is full. I would rather calculate the buffer too generously once than too tightly once.
One personal tip: if you still have energy on arrival day, walk the ten minutes from Mozartplatz down to the pier and watch how the late afternoon light comes across the water. The Mozarthaus on the square, where Mozart's mother was born, tells half of the village's story and the lake tells the other half. In heavy snowfall we move your pick-up earlier and tell you proactively rather than leaving you waiting.
Can we stop at the Wolfgangsee or in Fuschl on the way?+
