I have driven the Salzburg to Hallstatt route for many years, often several times a week, and no two days are alike. In spring and autumn the approach through the Gosau valley is wonderfully quiet, while in high summer the area around the village entrance can get busy from late morning. That is exactly why I recommend early pickup times: leave Salzburg at 8 am and you usually arrive before the main rush and enjoy the lake in the morning light.
In winter the B166 is more demanding, and the Pötschenpass in particular can turn slippery during snowfall. We always run winter tyres then and carry snow chains, so even fresh snow does not hold up the transfer. For guests heading on to ski near Obertraun or towards the Dachstein, we allow a more generous travel time so things stay relaxed even in wintry conditions.
My most important tip concerns parking: do not even try to drive your own car into the village. The centre is car-free, and the car parks outside are often full by mid-morning in season. As your driver I drop you as close as permitted, handle the rest, and return to the same point at the agreed time. That way Hallstatt stays in your memory as what it is, one of the most beautiful places in Austria, entirely without logistics stress.
