Almost every first time visitor underestimates the micro geography of St. Wolfgang. The village core sits in a narrow bay on the north shore of the Wolfgangsee, wedged between the water and the steep flank of the Schafberg. The lakefront promenade with the Weisses Roessl, the pilgrimage church and the cafés is largely traffic restricted. In practice that means no vehicle reaches every hotel door. We know the permitted access routes, the loading zones and the hours when they work, and we drop you at the closest permitted point, usually a few steps from your accommodation. Drive in yourself and you will often end up in a car park at the edge of the village, wheeling your suitcase the last stretch.
The B158 is a beautiful road with a character of its own. From Salzburg Aigen it climbs over the rise at Hof, drops to the Fuschlsee, winds through Fuschl am See and over the saddle towards St. Gilgen, then runs along the Wolfgangsee via Strobl into St. Wolfgang. There are blind curves, packs of cyclists in summer, heavy motorcycle traffic on fine weekends, and damp shaded sections in winter that can be slick early in the morning. Season governs everything. From June to September fine days back up around St. Gilgen and at the Strobl junction, when day trippers, coaches and swimmers all move at once. Second, the Pacher altar in the pilgrimage church is not open continuously, so check the hours. Third, many guests book only the outbound leg and then scramble for a ride from St. Wolfgang to Salzburg in the evening. I have been driving the Salzburg to St. Wolfgang route for over twelve years, on average several times a week. What surprises guests most is that the 50 minutes are not the problem, the last kilometre is. Arrive by rental car at two in the afternoon in July and you can lose half an hour hunting for a space, then still walk to the promenade. That is why I confirm the hotel and fix the drop off point with every guest before we set off.
My personal tip: schedule the outbound leg from Salzburg for the earlier part of the morning. The B158 around St. Gilgen is still quiet, the Schafbergbahn has capacity, and you get the light on the lake to yourself. For the return from St. Wolfgang to Salzburg I suggest not planning the evening too tightly. Many guests stay by the water longer than intended, and we would rather work to the real time than a rigid plan.
Advent follows its own rules. The market on the Wolfgangsee is beautiful and correspondingly busy. On those weekends I set off deliberately earlier, drop off at the permitted point, and am back precisely on time in the evening so my guests are not left searching in the cold.
