Flachau and Snow Space Salzburg: the fastest way onto the slopes

No other major resort is quicker to reach from the airport: around 50 minutes down the Tauern motorway and you are in Flachau. The Snow Space Salzburg alliance (Flachau, Wagrain, St. Johann) offers more than 200 kilometres of mostly wide, immaculately groomed pistes between roughly 800 and 2,000 metres. Snowmaking is excellent even though the altitudes are moderate. It is ideal for families, returning skiers and anyone who wants a few hours on snow on arrival day. Zell am See-Kaprun: lake, town and glacier skiing into May

Zell am See is the most versatile destination on this list: a genuine lakeside town, the Schmittenhöhe mountain on its doorstep, and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in neighbouring Kaprun, where the season runs into May. If you travel in late winter or over Easter, this is the region's best snow guarantee outside Obertauern. The drive from SZG takes about 1 hour 15 to 20 minutes; we deliberately use the reliable route via Pass Thurn into the Salzach valley, or the best alternative depending on traffic. Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Leogang: the Skicircus

The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is one of Austria's largest connected ski areas with around 270 kilometres of pistes. Saalbach is the lively side: big après-ski, mountain-hut culture, large hotels, perfect for groups and anyone chasing mileage. The transfer from SZG takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, though the final stretch through the Glemm valley demands patience during snowfall. Leogang, on the other side of the mountain, is the quieter, sportier option with state-of-the-art lifts and roughly 1 hour 10 minutes of driving. Maria Alm and Hochkönig: the quiet panorama option

If you want to escape the crowds, head to Maria Alm. The Hochkönig circuit (Maria Alm, Dienten, Mühlbach) offers around 120 kilometres of pistes beneath one of Austria's most dramatic mountain backdrops. The area is family-run in feel, and the villages have stayed small and authentic. At about 1 hour 5 minutes from the airport it is also one of the closer destinations. Bad Hofgastein: ski and spa in the Gastein Valley

The Gastein Valley is the right choice if you want to combine skiing with recovery. Bad Hofgastein sits centrally in the valley, the Schlossalm lift takes you into high, sunny terrain, and the Alpentherme thermal spa awaits after the ski day. Four sectors (Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel, Dorfgastein, Graukogel and Sportgastein) provide variety, and high-alpine Sportgastein above 2,600 metres holds good snow late into the season. Schladming: World Cup atmosphere on the Planai

Strictly speaking Schladming is in Styria, but at about 1 hour 15 minutes from Salzburg Airport it is very well connected. The 4-mountain circuit (Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen, Reiteralm) delivers long, sporty descents, above all the World Cup run on the Planai. Obertauern: the snow guarantee

Obertauern sits at around 1,740 metres right on the Radstädter Tauern pass, with slopes reaching above 2,300 metres. The result: natural snow from November into May, ski-in/ski-out from almost every hotel, and one of the longest non-glacier seasons in the Alps. The drive takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and the final section is a genuine mountain pass. During heavy snowfall snow chains are occasionally mandatory here; our vehicles are equipped accordingly. Kitzbühel: the classic

Kitzbühel needs little introduction: the Streif downhill, the medieval old town, elegant hotels and an extensive ski area with around 230 kilometres of pistes. The altitudes are moderate, but the snowmaking is among the best in the Alps and the season traditionally starts early. Practical tips for your winter transfer

• Saturday is changeover day: On peak-winter Saturdays, especially during the February holiday weeks, the Tauern motorway and valley roads are heavily loaded. Allow 30 to 60 minutes of buffer, or travel on a different day if you can.
• Winter equipment: In Austria, situational winter-tyre rules apply from 1 November to 15 April. All our vehicles run on winter tyres, and chains are on board for pass roads such as Obertauern.
• Flight delays: We track your arrival live. If your flight is late, your driver waits — you do not need to do anything.
• Be honest about luggage: Ski bags and boot bags need space. For families and groups, a van (Mercedes V-Class) is usually the more relaxed choice.
• Alternatives, fairly stated: ÖBB trains also run to Zell am See and Schladming — inexpensive and, in extreme snowfall, sometimes even more reliable than the road. Changing trains with ski luggage and children is tedious, however, and the last mile to your hotel remains unsolved. That gap is exactly what a private door-to-door transfer closes.
